BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW

Not so long ago, a Nobel Prize Winner visited our country, I can’t remember his name, anyway his name is not so important. What was important was that he shared with our nation through a very interesting topic: How To Be A Nobel Prize Winner.
He states various steps and things to do but what stands out was when he advises us to “unlearn”. In other words, we are asked not to let our present knowledge hinder our progress. According to him, one of the greatest obstacles to his Nobel Prize was the loads of information and knowledge that he had gathered through the years. That actually rings a bell – cos’ many inventions were actually made by people from a totally different field.
The more we know may actually hinder us. For example, people who know more tend to be stucked to their old assumptions and would not like to listen to others or they become more arrogant because they think they know more hence closing their minds to new knowledge or new ideas. The following definition of an expert could perhaps under-score this aspect :-
“An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less.”
There is also knowledge which is not relevant and could hinder the happiness of our lives. Example of which are the personal lives of celebrities, politicians etc. Sometimes I wonder why David Beckham’s personal affairs would have anything to do with our living a successful life ha! We already have enough information overloads.
What does all this mean? It means everybody could now be on the same level playing field. We cannot give ourselves the excuse that we can’t do a thing just because we don’t know much about it or we don’t have a degree or diploma. We can learn ANEW!
The Grand Zen Master Hui Leng, who can’t even read or write became the 6th Buddhist Patriach after Bodhidarma surpassing even his most senior and learned monk.
Lastly, I would like to share with you the following :-
“What is not known is more than what is known. In order to discover the unknown one may have to let go of the known.”
Yes, if one wants to experience and break our own mental constraint we truly have to “unlearn”. i.e. Do not let our mind be attached to anything – be free and open. Let our original mind manifest!
May you continue to unlearn, who knows you may be the next Nobel Prize Winner.
